Art and drama are a natural fit. They’re also a lot of fun to do during the summer! CENTRE STAGE has campers trying theatre sports, games and vocal exercises, performing skits and creating their own performance piece for our camp’s finale. We’ll take inspiration from one of Abbotsford’s very own unique historical tales of The Man Who Lived in the Tree Stump.

CENTRE STAGE Campers will have artistic license to design their set for the performance of The Man Who Lived in the Tree Stump. They’ll explore new and exciting ways of artistically conveying notions of dreams, the past and the future through shadow play and puppetry, transparency art projects using projection and utilizing the body as an art tool. Family and friends will be invited to attend this one-time-only performance—bring your camera!

Campers will learn about the connections between music and art by playing musical games, experimenting with sound using everyday objects as unconventional instruments, designing and performing on instruments made from used or found materials and learning about sound and music as it appears throughout art history.

Art projects will include performance art using the body and unusual objects as instruments, painting and drawing to music as a way of exploring elements and principles of design, trying new media like digital sound recording to make a “sound-scape” and more. Come and enjoy these projects and a musical performance on the last day of camp.

This camp incorporates the Kodály Method of musical education where through games, movement, songs and exercises, kids begin to learn how to notate music. Recorders will be used during SOUND and VISION, and can be brought from home or purchased new for $5 through The Reach.

A past favourite summer camp with a new twist! JUNIOR CURATORS and CREATORS will learn in a fun and dynamic way how our exhibitions come to be. Looking at The Reach’s own heritage and contemporary arts exhibitions, and other galleries and museums, campers will be inspired to create and curate.

JUNIOR CURATORS and CREATORS will create their own art works and get to try a number of different techniques and processes throughout camp. They then will decided how they want to display all of their fantastic projects, just like a curator, at their very own exhibition on the final day of camp. Family and friends are invited—bring your camera!
