By Ania Glowacka. It’s easy to prevent hitting a plateau, maintain your motivation and inevitably reach your fitness goals. Incorporate cross training into your fitness regime.

Cross training incorporates several different forms of exercise in one training program. By frequently changing your routine, you are able to maintain your progress and reach your goals. Cross training inhibits the ability for your body to completely adapt and prevents an exercise plateau. An exercise plateau is a period during training when there is no apparent improvement being made even though training continues.
Have you been running on a treadmill for miles and miles getting nowhere? Change it up and try a fitness class one of the days instead, or break up the minutes between different machines: 10 minutes on the treadmill, 10 minutes on the elliptical, and 10 minutes on the stationary bike. Perhaps you’re one that does heavy lifting. Take a break from lifting heavy weights and try some full body plyometric exercises such as jump squats or jumping jacks. Are you looking for a complete change? A personal trainer can help you revamp your routine and tailor a program to your specific goals.

Continuing the same routine over a long period of time can also cause boredom and in turn inhibit your motivation to keep your fitness routine going. By adding various styles of training in one program, you continuously challenge your muscles preventing an exercise plateau. It is this constant change that will also challenge your mind and prevent a loss in motivation.
Incorporating cross training will not only keep your progress going forward, but also decrease the chance for injuries as your body becomes accustomed to different styles of training and functionality.
Change it up and learn something new, your body will thank you for it!
