Centennial Park’s Spring Break Literacy Camp

Submitted. A successful literacy camp was held during spring break at Centennial Park Elementary, to support grade 1 and 2 students. Reading was the focus for the program, and the camp leaders incorporated it in a variety of ways, Principal Bonnie Iftody told the Board.

The students were put into guided
reading groups at their various reading levels
and, depending on their needs, instruction was
focused on comprehension, decoding and fluency.

The program utilized a pirate theme, and incorporated various
literacy threads into the program. Students used iPads,
did themed chants/songs/poems, ‘echo read’ pirate mini
books, and had their own copies of these books to keep
and share at home.

Parents and the students were pleased with the results.

The camp which also included arts, crafts,
and physical activity was run by a Centennial
Park teacher and staff from Central Abbotsford
Community School, which runs similar programs at other
elementary schools in the district.
