Police Blow Up Suspicious Device, Reopen Garden Street

UPDATED 10/06/13 0 14:11. Police have now reopened the area of 2700 Garden Street after a suspicious device was located at a business earlier this morning.

The device, which can be described as a plastic tube with black electrical tape around one end, was blown up by a water cannon used by the RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit. (EDU)

“Whoever is responsible for planting this device wanted people to think this was a functional explosive,” said Sgt. Casey Vinet. “We are now in the process of trying to identify who that person (or persons) is and why it was left at the back of this particular business. Whether this was a prank of some sort or otherwise is still yet to be determined.”

There are no suspects at this time.

Cops Shut Down Garden Street Due To Suspicious Device
Submitted. Abbotsford Police have shut down an area in the 2700 block of Garden Street after receiving a report of a suspicious device earlier this morning.

At 9:15 a.m. staff at a business in the 2700 block of Garden Street called police after an employee spotted a suspicious device at the back of the property. Police have shut down the area to traffic and have evacuated neighbouring businesses until a proper assessment of the device can be made.

Traffic on Garden Street between South Fraser Way and Simon Avenue will be re-routed until further notice.
