In conjunction with International Museums Day in May, the MSA Museum Society will be hosting a steampunk-themed event at the historical Trethewey House Heritage Site in Abbotsford on May 18th.

Steampunk mixes science fiction, fantasy, history, and speculative fiction and focuses on Victorian era Britain and the ”Wild West”-era in the United States. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology or futuristic innovations as Victorians might have envisioned them, based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style and art and technology that includes such fictional machines as those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne’s books. You will have to imagine that you were a person living in the late 19th century thinking of what 2013 would look like! Imagine all the flying machines and earth diggers, the ability to time travel, the fashions and all things spectacular! The Museum Society is looking to put together a day of fun for the general public and steampunk enthusiasts alike.

Last year’s event was sort of a ”let’s test the waters” event, and since it was such a success, we decided to grow it and nurture it for this year. There will be everything from umbrella fight demos and body art to crafts for kids and some good old snake oil sales people telling us about their wares. Of course there will also be an opportunity to peruse the vending booths of our steampunk-themed vendors!
