From SD #34. There have been a number of achievements of late by students and schools in the Abbotsford School District. This is not a complete list by any means, but we do want to acknowledge (in no particular order):

  • Two student from the district will be part of the five student Fraser Valley delegation going to the Provincial Heritage Fair in Victoria. Andrew Williams-Turner from Dormick Park Elementary (project:”My Mom and The Samahquam First Nation”) and Taylor Kyte from Prince Charles Elementary ( project “Diane Foster; Bronze Medal Olympian”) will travel to Victoria in early July.
  • Robert Bateman Secondary — Grand Prize Winner of The Air We Share Contest sponsored by The BC Lung Association ; receive cheque for $1,500
  • Margaret Stenersen and Alexander Elementary schools, have each received hundreds of new books as runners-up along with 17 other schools across Canada in the Summer Reading Initiative where First Book Canada and Indigo Love of Reading Foundation have partnered to provide new books to schools.
  • Yale Secondary student selected to represent Canada at International Chemistry Olympiad in Russia.
  • Three Abbotsford students achieve gold medals at the national Skills Canada competitions
  • Abbotsford School of Integrated Arts–North Poplar — designated a 2013-2015 Exemplary School by Arts Schools Network, North America’s largest professional membership organization of specialized arts schools. The designation was created to highlight a commitment to excellence by an Arts Schools Network member school. It also recognizes efforts by a school to evaluate its purpose, operations, and educational programs.
  • Career Programs—on behalf of Abbotsford School District, awarded the 2013/14 Career Education Society Secondary School Apprenticeship Grant of $50,000.00.
  • Abbotsford Middle grade 8 student Baneet Braich received a silver medal for her project at the recent Canada-Wide Science Fair. Her project “Asbestos and Swift Creek” was awarded the silver medal along with a $2,300 scholarship to Western University. This was the only silver medal achieved by a Fraser Valley region student.
  • Abbotsford City of Character Society, awarded a “Promising Practices Award” by Character Education Partnership in Washington, DC for the City of Character Youth Forum concept, including the inaugural forum held at WJ Mouat in 2012.
  • Abby Senior Secondary’s Panthers repeat as provincial girls senior rugby champions.
  • Some 1,560 Grade 12’s graduate from the Abbotsford School District to form our “Class of 2013 “!
