Submitted.  The Manufacturing Safety Alliance of B.C. has signed a partnership MOU with the B.C. Alliance for Manufacturing. The Manufacturing Safety Alliance of B.C. (formerly known as FIOSA-MIOSA) is the health and safety association for manufacturers and food processors in British Columbia. Serving over 3,000 companies, the Manufacturing Safety Alliance of B.C. helps guide the implementation of effective occupational health and safety management systems, that transform the safety culture of member organizations. The B.C. Alliance for Manufacturing is a coalition of 19 like-minded manufacturing industry associations and organizations with a common vision to promote a world-class manufacturing sector in British Columbia. This collaborative body speaks with one voice on priority issues, to advance and defend the interests of manufacturers. Their aim is to ensure that all British Columbians benefit from the economic growth within the manufacturing sector in B.C. The Alliance is currently focused on skills development and job training as workforce shortages is the major issue raised by all employers. Manufacturing is the fourth largest component of provincial GDP contributing 7.2% of the provincial economy and 30% of the business tax revenue paid to government. It is also the third largest employer in B.C. with more than 12,000 companies employing almost 400,000 jobs both directly and indirectly. Value-added manufacturing represents almost 65% of B.C.’s exports. The collaboration between the parties aims to effectively combine and leverage the unique assets and strengths of each organization, to better serve the manufacturers of B.C. The main area of focus here is looking to improve the safety culture within the organisation through education, participation and awareness.

The MOU has been effective from 21 September, 2016 ‘We aim to enhance and build on our common interests with the B.C. Alliance for Manufacturing by fostering a spirit of professionalism and collegiality between peer organizations. Our focus within the Manufacturing Safety Alliance of B.C. mandate is to help foster a culture of safety in the manufacturing industry to help reduce injuries and the costs associated with them to build sustainable manufacturing businesses in BC.

The B.C. Alliance for Manufacturing is a designated delivery partner for the Canada-BC Job Grant program and we will be encouraging our members to contact them to support the completion of their applications for qualified health & safety training.’ Lisa McGuire, CEO of the Manufacturing Safety Alliance of B.C. said. “We look forward to cross promoting our members, with the initiative of the Alliance partners that are of mutual interest to the broader manufacturing community’ said Greg Hoing, Executive Director of the B.C.
