On December 21, 2012 at 1700 hours a suspect committed a Break and Enter to a residence at a property located in the 30000 block of Nicholson Avenue. A witness observed the suspect and contacted the Abbotsford Police. Four APD patrol officers arrived on scene and one officer blocked the driveway to the residence that contained a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck that the suspect arrived in. The man exited the home, jumped into the truck and accelerated down the driveway and toward the marked police vehicle. The truck collided with the police car and continued onto Nicholson Avenue. Two other police officers arrived into the area and one was able to successfully deploy a spike belt which deflated one of the truck’s tires. Despite this the vehicle and suspect continued on.

Minutes later the truck was found abandoned in the intersection of Mt. Lehman Road and Automall Drive. A woman advised the arriving officers that she had her 2006 Toyota Corolla stolen from her at gunpoint by a male suspect from the truck. APD officers would also learn that the truck was speeding, was on the wrong side of the road and had side swiped a Chevrolet Cavalier and its driver prior to being abandoned. Police would also later confirm the pick-up truck to be stolen.

A witness who had observed the car-jacking attempted to follow the stolen Toyota and update police as both vehicles travelled Westbound on the freeway. The witness lost the suspect in traffic. The Toyota was recovered near a shopping complex in Burnaby.

The Abbotsford Police Department led a combined policing effort which ultimately determined that 30 year old Steve Martin Jasper of Surrey was not only responsible for the series of criminal incidents in Abbotsford, but between December 15, 2012 and January 20, 2013, he committed offences in six other cities as well.

Investigators and Crime Analysts from those jurisdictions have worked diligently to bring numerous charges against Jasper. In relation to the Abbotsford incidents, he has been charged with Possession of Stolen Property over $5000.00, Break and Enter, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Robbery and Use of an Imitation Firearm in the commission of an offence.
