Summer School Cancelled

By July 2, 2014Education

Statement by Superintendent Godden. Academic (Gr 9-12) and Enhancement (Gr.1-8) Summer School in Abbotsford School District has been cancelled. A letter is being sent home to parents/guardians of students registered in Academic Summer School as follows:

As a follow up to our previous correspondence about summer school, this is to advise that we have made the unfortunate decision to cancel our secondary summer school program this year.  As you know, the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation has decided to picket all summer school programs around the province, so the program could not function under these circumstances.

The Labour Relations Board ruled on Friday, June 27th, that summer school programs are essential only for students in grades 10, 11, and 12 who failed a course during the previous year.  This is a very small portion of our summer school program.  The vast majority of our students take summer school courses for advancement, and not because they have failed. Where applicable, students who failed a grade 10, 11 or 12 course will be able to access it through the district’s distributed learning program (Abbotsford Virtual School).  Please contact the school at 604-859-9803 or through the websitewww.avs34.com.

Once again, we apologize for any inconvenience that has been caused.  We look forward to operating a full summer school program next year.
