The Reach Adds More Artsy Camps For Summer

By July 12, 2014Arts/Culture

Submitted. The Reach is exploding with creativity this summer and has just added two more summer camps for all ages!

“Due to creative demand, we are excited to offer additional arts and heritage camps (The Little Creators camp and The Book as Art camp” says Julie Epp, Cultural Programs Assistant for The Reach, who will be leading the full day camps this summer.

Full-Day Summer Camps at The Reach include:

At the Art Cart Masterpieces camp July 21 to 25th, campers will be inspired by the new exhibitions including Takao Tanabe: Chronicles of Form and Place and Record, (Re)create: Contemporary Coast Salish Art from the Salish Weave Collection at The Reach. Kids will try out art making techniques only available in our professional studio and create a group masterpiece that will be auctioned off to the public at our Reach fundraiser in September.

During our July 28 to August 1st The Art of Tinkering camp, innovative campers will test, experiment and get involved in all sorts of fun and exciting projects that demonstrate how art making connects with science, math, writing and history. This camp is so much more than just putting paint to canvas; it’s all about play and getting messy.

Our History is Alive! campers will be out in the community August 11 to 15th to learn about Abbotsford in its early days. In fact, long time cartoonist and Abbotsford historian Ernie Poignant will join us and share some of his work from decades as early as the 1930’s and 1940’s! Campers will engage in storytelling, illustration, and bringing back old traditions.

All Reach full-day camps run from 9am to 3pm week days and are for ages 6 to 12 years old.

Half-Day Camps at The Reach include:

At the July 7 to 11th camp Little Creators (ages 3-5) will try their hands at a variety of age appropriate summer time projects and get them comfortable with utilizing materials and tools used daily in the art world. No parent participation required!

At the July 7 to 11th The Book as Art camp, 13 to 17 year-olds explore how artists use books as art objects. They’ll touch on themes of identity, nostalgia, memory and storytelling, plus re-work used books into their own artful works.

The Little Creators camp runs from 9am to 11am, and The Book as Art runs from 1pm to 3pm, for ages 13 to 17.
