UFV Nursing Health Fair At Sevenoaks Shopping Mall

By Darren McDonald. From speech development in toddlers to flu prevention for octogenarians, this week’s Health Fair at Abbotsford’s Sevenoaks Shopping Centre offers advice for the entire family.

Running 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, the fair is hosted by fourth-year UFV Bachelor of Science in Nursing students, continuing a tradition of that spans nearly 14 years. Fairs traditionally operate once in the spring and fall, with students creating booths and offering advice on approved topics.

“It’s a great opportunity for people of all ages to ask questions and learn about health promotion topics and resources in our community,” says organizer and BSN assistant professor Kate McCulloch.

The mall set-up typically services seniors, but organizers scheduled this year’s fair on a Pro-D day with hopes of engaging with more children and families.

The fair has a longstanding history of allowing students to prepare for accurately delivering important information on a variety of health topics.

This year’s topics include: Hypertension in middle adulthood; speech and language development for children up to five years old; nutrition information for parents of elementary school children; influenza information for seniors; the effects of alcohol/binge drinking targeted towards young adults; exercise for families; and cardiovascular health for middle adulthood.

The health fair will be located near the rear entrance of Sevenoaks, next to Dollar Giant.
