Women’s Team Wins Provincial B Cup Final

Abbotsford’s Magnuson Ford United Mariners Women’s team won the Provincial “B” Cup final after knocking off Bombastic from Vancouver 3-2 on Sunday on the turf at Burnaby Lakes Sports Complex. The sun shone brightly on our ladies as they controlled the start of the first half breaking the deadlock in the 9th minute when Kristen Vanden Pauw buried a corner kick from Danielle Schmidt making it 1-0.

Bombastic tied it up on a penalty kick in the 18th minute and then went ahead on a quickly taken free kick from just outside the penalty area in the 23rd minute with a shot to the top corner of the goal just out of the reach of the Mariner goalie Karlee Arden.

The ladies went into the break at the half down 2-1.

The second half was filled with end to end action unitl the 71st minute when Vander Pauw scored her second of the game on a pass from Megan Webster to tie the match.

Seeing the Bombastic team was back on their heels, the Mariner ladies kept pushing and three minutes later Shelby Beck slammed home a rebounded shot from Ashandeep Sandu to put our ladies up for good.

Solid defending from Schmidt, Donna Pinning, Annika Reimer and Lauren Kruger didn’t allow the ladies from Bombastic another shot on goal.

When the final whistle was blown there was a loud cheer from the large group of supporters from Abbotsford. It was a great way to celebrate Mother’s Day.

Ashley Yeamans was selected Most Valuable Player of the game.

Other team members are Cassie Hugh, Ellen Kuyer, Heather Strating, Hilda Perlinger, Sally Burnell, Paige Dudzik and Stephanie Yaretz.
