Young Contemporaries Take The Lead At The Reach

By September 19, 2013Arts/Culture

Submitted. Millennials are taking over The Reach! Starting this fall, The Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsford is launching a new project for young people aged 18 to 35 called the Young Contemporaries. With an awards program, an exhibition and many opportunities to showcase the work of young artists, plus social events, classes, workshops, speakers, tours, field trips and more, the project aims to create a more vibrant, more creative and dynamic city for young people.

“According to BC Stats, there are over 35,000 people aged 18-35 living in Abbotsford,” says Gabriel Kirkley, a designer of the project, “We want to create something that’s specifically for our generation here at The Reach because we’re the future of this city and this region. We want to showcase what young people can do. We’re not just looking for artists – anyone interested in culture, music and getting involved in their community is welcome.”

Members of the project will have the opportunity to be nominated for the Young Artist of the Year Award, as well as to be part of the Young Contemporaries Exhibition in January 2014. Any kind of artistic work will be eligible for the award and exhibition, including painting, photography, sculpture, performance art, graphic design and film.

Additionally, Contemporaries can submit their work to be shown at monthly Art on Tap nights starting October 17. Held in partnership with CiVL Radio, Art on Tap will feature bands from across Canada, food, refreshments and art work created by members.

Classes and workshops will be held at The Reach for beginners and more advanced artists. Learn about a wide range of topics from documenting art work to project grant writing, from life drawing sessions to new media art. You could study the steps to canning food or sip a brew with friends at a collage party. There may even be an oh-so necessary course on how to turn that stick figure into an actual figure – the Young Contemporaries will have the opportunity to flex all their creative muscles.

Membership in the project starts at $25 for individuals with discounts of up to 50% available when you sign up with friends. Visit www.youngcontemporaries.ca to register and for more information.
