Life Inside The Fortress

After being moved around the City on a daily and monthly basis for over a decade some of Abbotsford’s homeless finally decided to make a stand and refuse to take it any more.

What began October 20 as a temporary day of action grew into a two-month protest which has garnered provincial and national attention for a City already reeling from its international reputation for controlling its homeless citizens with chicken feces last summer.

After the City asked a judge for permission to use force to evict the homeless protesters out of Jubilee Park, the Drug War Survivors (DWS) moved into a wooden structure, built by volunteers out of donated wooden platforms for the proposal put forward by the DWS for long term housing on municipal land.

For a few days the protesters were able live in relative security inside what became known as ‘The Fortress,’ until the City forced them back into the park from which they were trying have them forcibly removed.
