By Shaheen Shivji. If there is one belief 20-year-old Ashley Herar holds dear in her heart is that girls and women “can do anything.”

While growing up in Abbotsford, Herar observed that the women in her life struggled and dealt with some of life’s harshest adversities on their own. It was during those adolescent years her resolve to help empower girls and women took shape.

Choosing Miss BC as a vehicle to do just that, Ms. Herar said, “I disagree that pageants are simply beauty contests—it takes more than beauty to participate in today’s pageants. For example, self-confidence and presentation skills are essential. For those who believe looks are needed to be successful in today’s society are wrong because an individual’s quality is what really matters. I believe Miss BC will provide a platform for those young women who may look up to me to remind themselves in tough times to remain strong,” she said.

Ms. Herar who is Abbotsford’s sole Miss BC contestant is a third-year Criminal Justice student at the University of the Fraser Valley as well as a full-time hairstylist and aesthetician Arvis Hair Design, a salon owned by her mom. In addition to studying and working she is passionate about living an active healthy lifestyle, which she regularly enjoys through running and dance.

As a career in law enforcement is a future aspiration, she will be hosting a burger and brew night fundraiser for Cops For Cancer at Townhall Public House on May 31 from 7:00pm onward. Ms. Herar’s goal is to raise $1500.00.

Cops For Cancer is a charity Miss BC raises funds for annually. To date they have raised over $200,000.00.
