Students from Abbotsford School District schools took the majority of awards and prizes at the annual Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair, held last week at the University of the Fraser Valley’s Abbotsford campus.
Out of 52 award recipients, 30 came from Abbotsford schools. Leading the award count was Auguston Traditional Elementary receiving 10 awards; Barrowtown Elementary with five, Abbotsford Middle with four, Clayburn Middle and John Maclure Elementary schools with three each. Students from Abbotsford Traditional Secondary School, WJ Mouat Secondary, William A. Fraser Middle and Upper Sumas Elementary also received awards. Other districts represented included Langley and Chilliwack along with various independent schools.
Three projects were chosen ‘Grand Prize Winners’ for an all expenses trip to the Canada Wide Science Fair, to be held in May in Lethbridge: Baneet Braich from Abbotsford Middle School (“Asbestos in Swift Creek”); Harshleen Buttar from Dasmesh Punjabi School (“Diabetes in Indo-Canadians”); Gurmeen Banipal and Charanpreet Mahal with an independent project (“Sensing the Way”).
