From CBC. After winning a thrilling 5 set match Friday afternoon against defending national champions, the VIU Mariners, the Columbia Bearcats faced off against their cross-town rivals, the UFV Cascades, for provincial gold.
The first set saw the Bearcats get off to a tremendous start and take a commanding lead early on in the championship game. However, the UFV Cascades, the #1 seed coming into the tournament, battled back and eventually stole the first set, picking up a great deal of momentum in the process.
While the lady Bearcats battled hard the rest of the match, they were eventually defeated in straight sets 19-25, 15-25, 17-25, finishing the tournament in second place. Anna Cupido was named player of the game as well as a provincial tournament all-star along with teammate April van Wieren.
With their second place finish, the Columbia Bearcats women’s volleyball team not only won a provincial silver medal, but they made history in the process. This is the first time in CBC’s history that a women’s volleyball team has captured a provincial silver medal. Not only that, but it is also the first a women’s squad has qualified for the CCAA National Tournament as well, which will be held March 7-9 in Lloydminster, AB.
