By David Kent. The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team defeated the MRU Cougars, 79-66, tonight in Canada West regular season action. The Cascades record improves to 3-3 in the Pacific Division while the Cougars falls to 3-3.
Fresh off their two-point loss on Friday night, UFV came out shooting tonight and quickly opened up a lead that they held onto from opening whistle to closing. UFV was able to establish a more controlled game tonight creating better shot selections and shooting 36 percent from the floor for the game. The Cascades led by two points after the first quarter and had their best quarter of the weekend in the second frame as they outscored MRU by nine points to open an 11 point spread at the break.
In the second half, the Cougars made a game of it as they came within two points of tying UFV late in the fourth quarter before UFV went on a 10-2 run to secure the home victory and head off to Edmonton to face the University of Alberta Golden Bears and Saskatoon, to face the Saskatchewan Huskies next weekend.
The Cascades were led by Kevon Parchment, Toronto, Ontario with 29 points and 6 rebounds and 2 assists to be named the VBN “Player of the Game.” Kadeem Wills, Toronto, Ontario continued his hot scoring with 21 points and a team high 15 boards. UFV out rebounded MRU 46 to 27 for the game.
The Cougars top scorer was Awet Abraha, Calgary, Alberta with 19 points and James Lefebvre, Didsbury, Alberta with 12 points.
“We played much better tonight. We stayed with our game plan even when MRU went ion their run in the fourth quarter.” Said UFV head coach Adam Friesen.
