The UFV Cascades women’s soccer team grabbed three goals in 10 minutes tonight against the UBCO Heat, a spectacular offensive flurry that catapulted the squad to their seventh straight win. The Cascades maintain their hold on first place in the Pacific division with a 7-1-0 record, while the Heat fall to 0-5-3.
It would be hard to describe UFV’s performance tonight as anything but dominant. Outshooting the Heat 18 to six, the Cascades poured on the pressure in an all-out attack on the Heat goal. Still, UBCO managed to stymie that attack for eighty minutes of tonight’s contest, leaving only ten for the Cascades to show the true quality of their offense.
The defensive dam finally broke before the prowess of Kara Delwo. The UFV midfielder gave the Cascades the first goal of the game (49th minute) with her second goal of the year. Alexis Cattermole was next to strike (56th minute), bagging her first tally of the year. Both goals were assisted by UFV striker Shelby Beck, who very generously decided to pad her teammates’ stats rather than add to her own formidable numbers.
Monika Levarsky grabbed the third goal in the 59th minutes to slip past Beck into sole possession of the Cascades’ storing title. Levarsky and Beck now sit fourth and fifth among offensive leaders in the Canada West with 14 and 11 points respectively. The nine goals between them have boosted the Cascades to the second-highest goal total in the conference (15), and collectively the two have 45 of UFV’s 102 shots (Levarsky has taken 27, Beck 18).
“I am very proud of our team, we showed great perseverance in fighting the frustration of not being able to finish,” said Cascades coach Rob Giesbrecht. “We played very assertively throughout the 45 minutes, but couldn’t find the back of the net in the first half. The girls came out to start the second half with a very positive and determined mentality. Our first eight games have been good; however, we have struggled with consistently turning positive play into goals, and it was great to see us finish well tonight.”
The Cascades have a bye next week, while the Heat will travel to Victoria on Friday, Oct. 3 to take on the Vikes at 5 pm. All games will be streamed with live video and stats at http://canadawest.tv
