CIVL Radio 101.7 FM’s 2nd annual Battle of the Bands, #CIVLSSBattle debuted on Monday, March 17. CIVL congratulates Tristan Smith, as he was crowned champion of the first battle, with 112 out of a possible 150 points decided by three judges!
Three solo performers played for fans at Aftermath at UFV for an afternoon of competition and original live music. Todd Brown began the battle with his collection of songs about Canada, and started his set with the tender Yellowhead Highway. “Please head back to Calgary,” he pleads in his melodic tune with his guitar.
Banjo and guitar-playing and Matt McAllister was up next, introducing his set with, “This is about flowers and nice things.” Switching instruments halfway through the set, he ended with “Weird Ideas”.
Tristan Smith was the last to battle and entertained audiences in between songs with stories of his first crush.
A big thank you and a job well done to the other battlers! Those who were not chosen in this regular battle round still have the chance to move into the playoff round through wildcard voting on Facebook. Fans are also encouraged to like CIVL’s Facebook page for the opportunity to vote for their favourite artist.
The next battle takes place again at Aftermath at UFV, on Monday, March 24. Five more singer-songwriters will compete, including Alex Rake, Corey Primus, Patrick Jolicouer, John Welsh and a competitor from last year’s battles, Andrew Muller of My Goal is Telepathy.
