Submitted. The month may be half over, but there is still a lot going on before the end of January at the University of the Fraser Valley. Here’s a non-comprehensive list of public activities and events at the University of the Fraser Valley Jan 31.
UFV’s Visual Arts gallery has several shows scheduled from January through April and several of them have a connection to UFV Visual Arts alumni, including one that is on right now: Listen as the Whispers Look Around, by Scott Schell (UFV Alumnus), running Jan 7–25. Listens as the Whispers Look Around is a collection of works that have been developed over the last two years by alumni Scott Schell. Some of the pieces are from an ongoing project composed of concrete rocks of casted body parts. These sculptures are left outdoors in public locations to offer a moment of accidental surprise; they provide an opportunity to reflect on the human interaction with the physical and emotional space and to consider what is left behind as a result. Through Jan 27 — Ernestine Shuswap Gets Her Trout , presented by UFV Theatre, continues its run at the UFV performance theatre at the Yale Road Chilliwack location. Ernestine is a bittersweet tragicomedy by award winning First Nations playwright Tomson Highway. It runs at UFV Theatre to Jan 27. Tickets and can be ordered by calling local 2814 or by emailing theatre@ufv.ca.
Thurs, Jan 24–Sat. Jan 26 — Come out and see the UFV’s Agriculture booth at the 15th Annual Pacific Agriculture Show at the Tradex.
Fri, Jan 25 and Sat, Jan 26 — Men’s and women’s basketball hosts UNBC of Prince George both nights. Women at 6 pm; men at 8 pm. Support your Cascades! Bring the kids! The women’s basketball team is ranked #1 in Canada!
Sat, Jan 26 — Abbotsford Family Literacy Day Celebration. UFV is participating in the Abbotsford Family Literacy Celebration. Hosted by Clearbrook Library and The Reach Gallery Museum on Abbotsford in partnership with the MSA Museum Society. Activities from 9:30 am–2 pm at UFV Clearbrook Centre, the FVRL Clearbrook branch, and The Reach Gallery.
Mon, Jan 28 — Kai Nagata presentation. At 24 years old, Kai Nagata quit his well-paying job at the CTV in Quebec for various reasons he posted in a blog entry titled “Why I Quit My Job.” The blog went viral and received both praise and criticisms across Canada. Kai Nagata will talk about the current status of media and journalism and answer questions. Check out his blog at kainagata.com. This free lecture is brought to you by the Social, Cultural, and Media Studies department and the Media and Communications Student Group. Abbotsford campus, B101, 4–7pm.
Mon, Jan 28 — Futurist Herb O’Heron on the Value of a Degree, part of the President’s Leadership Lecture series. Although not as famous as Alvin Toffler, Herb O’Heron is the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC)’s very own futurist. He looks at statistics and trends in education and makes predictions for the future of post-secondary education in Canada. O’Heron will be providing his insights on The Value of a Degree as part of the President’s Leadership Lecture series on Monday, Jan 28 at 4:30 pm in Building A, Room 225 (boardroom) at the Abbotsford campus.
Tues, Jan 29 — UFV will be at the BC Job Fair in Mission. The job fair runs from 11 am –6 pm at the Best Western Plus Mission, 32281 Lougheed Hwy. Mission BC.
