If the first eight home games of the season are any indication, it is going be another giving year as we live through another season under George Peary’s Deal whereby Abbotsford taxpayers pay to ensure that neither the Calgary Flames nor the rich local owners of the AHL’s best on ice team with the worst attendance lose any money.
While detractors continue to blame the inability of the Heat to even garner a break-even crowd of between 3,000 and 3,500 on the fact Abbotsford has a website which criticizes politicians, the fact is that Sunday nights 2,400 attendance figure only brought up average attendance this year to 2,191 – the worst in the AHL. Just how long Mayor Banman can keep smiling and pretending its a good idea to keep rich people rich on the backs of his friends and neighbours is an open question but he seems to think the solution is to smile, sing a song and then argue that taxpayers, who are already being screwed by his City’s continued subservience to the rich owners of the Heat, should go out and pay double for the Heat by buying a ticket and paying their taxes.Banman’s last bright idea was to have Chamber of Commerce members buy Heat tickets, which made sense because the Chamber was such a vocal supporter of Plan A and George Peary’s Deal. We’ll see if he makes the same pitch at this year’s luncheon.
Banman is kicking off his re-election campaign in the safe confines of the Chamber of Commerce Luncheon with Mayor on November 27th.
