NHL hockey legend Pat Quinn and Lieutenant-Colonel Christopher Henderson, MSM, CD will be among those at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports centre April 7 for the Heroes Hockey Challenge.
Conceived in 2010 by Mr. Glenn Cumyn and refined by the original partners, Heroes Hockey Challenge (HHC) was developed to raise funds that will go to support wounded and their families and families of the fallen. The HHC events feature a game of hockey between soldiers and former NHL players. In early 2012, three HHC events were held: a game and a gala dinner in Calgary; and a gala dinner in Vancouver. These three events raised more than $85,000 for military charities. The events in Abbotsford on 6 and 7 April 3013 build on the lessons learned from the 2012 events.
A Gala Dinner will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, 6 April 2013 at Phoenix Lounge, 33780 King Road, Abbotsford, BC, V2S 7P2, 604-859-2220 (located adjacent to Finnegan’s Pub). Tickets will be available for $168 (taxes included) via this website after 1 December 2012.
At the Gala Dinner, there will be two guest speakers: a distinguished soldier (Lieutenant-Colonel Christopher Henderson, MSM, CD recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal for
his service in Afghanistan) and an NHL hockey legend Pat Quinn. The Dinner will follow military formal dinner procedures. Live and silent auctions will be conducted.The Game will be played at the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre, 33800 King Road, Abbotsford, BC V2S 7P2, Telephone (604) 743-5000 at 3 p.m. on Sunday, 7 April 2013. The game will feature former NHL greats such as Pat Quinn, Cliff Ronning, Dave Babych, Dave “Tiger” Williams, Ryan Walter, Ron Stern, and Gino Odjick.
The Game will be preceded by a VIP reception and will also feature serving and former active members of Canada’s Army, well-known celebrities, NHL stars, sponsors and dignitaries, future greats from the local minor hockey community, and civic leaders from the community.
Tickets for the Game, may be purchased on-line at via this website after 1 December 2012. Tickets are $29.75 each including taxes.
The official opening will feature the National Anthem with both teams and minor hockey players on the ice, followed by the playing of the Heroes Hockey Challenge Video. The game will be played in two 20 minute halves, with a minor hockey match at the intermission between the NHL legends and a local minor hockey players. There will be an NHL legends autograph station with an autograph session, at the end of the game, and locations to be decided. HHC memorabilia and apparel will be sold at the Gala and at the Game.
The two events are being conducted with a view to raising substantial funds to support the charitable work of the PPCLI Foundation.
