Submitted. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken conduct of a Hit and Run which occurred on July 11, 2014 in the 2200 block of McKenzie Road in Abbotsford.
A 41 year old male sustained injuries as a result of the impact and died in hospital on July 13, 2014.
On July 12, 2014 Abbotsford Police Department arrested and charged a male in connection to this Hit and Run. He was charged with several offences including Aggravated Assault, Assault, Fail to Remain at Scene of Accident and Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle Causing Bodily Harm.
This investigation remains dynamic in nature and as more information is gleaned by investigators it will dictate the direction and flow of the investigation. To date, there is evidence to suggest this Hit and Run may have been a deliberate act; therefore, as of July 15, 2014, IHIT has taken the lead and are currently looking at homicide related charges.
“The investigation to date suggests that this incident stemmed from an argument between the suspect and a resident in the area. The victim, who also resides in the area, became engaged in this argument which precipitated his injuries and ultimately his death,” says S/Sgt. Jennifer Pound.
Moving forward in this potential homicide investigation IHIT has liaised with Crown Counsel regarding the initial 4 charges. As of July 16, 2014, these charges were stayed by Crown Counsel. IHIT will continue to gather evidence and speak with potential witnesses. Once the evidence gathering stage has been exhausted we will be better able to assess whether or not charges will be forthcoming.
IHIT is asking anyone with information, who have not already spoken with police, to come forward and call the IHIT tipline 1-877-551-4448.
