From The Mariners. Abbotsford’s Magnuson Ford Womens team qualified for the Provincial “B” Cup semi-final after knocking off Prospect Lake 2-1 on Sunday on the turf at Mouat. The sun shone brite on our ladies as they controlled most of the first half finally breaking the deadlock at the 40th minute when Shandelle Steine sent the ball through to Danielle Schmidt who in turn fed a perfect pass for Megan Webster to bury into the net from 20 yards out making it 1-0.
4 minutes later, the locals went up 2-0, on a penalty kick from Webster after she was taken down hard in the area.
The ladies went into the break at the half dominating most of the play.
The second half was a different story as the Prospect Lake women pushed to get back into the game. Had it not been for the back line of Sarb Dhillon, Donna Pinning, Brittlyn Nickel, and Lauren Kruger the score could have been a lot tighter.
The visitors finally got onto the board at the 65th minute making it interesting for the balance of the game.
Steady play in the midfield by Webster, Schmidt, Steine, Ellen Kuyer and Meghan Emes held off the onslaught. Heather Strating kept the ladies from the Island on their heels with numerous scoring opportunities.
A little concern late in the second half when the local’s goalkeeper, Karlee Arden, was kneed hard in the head by the Prospect Lake striker. Knowing what was on the line, she shook it off, got up and continued her stella performance to finish out the game.
Paige Dudzik and Ashandeep Sandhu were also solid coming in off the bench.
This Sunday, the ladies travel to Vancouver Island where they play Gorge FC with the winner receiving a berth in the Provincial Cup Final in Victoria on May 11th.
