Submitted. With the recent streak of great weather in the Fraser Valley, it’s an ideal climate for residents to explore creative depictions of weather at The Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsford.

In her fascinating Maps of Weather exhibition, artist Willa Downing shows a recent body of mixed media artworks that combine mapping, scientific phenomena and artistic imagination. Rational, grid-like structures are contrasted with the much more organic shapes used to describe natural phenomena. The artist layers drawing, painting and a variety of collaged materials – the intricacy of this process recalls the interconnectedness of humans and their environment.

Downing, who has a PhD in biochemistry (UBC) and a diploma in painting (ECUAD), combines her passion for both art and science in this exhibition, which runs from February 5th to March 1st at The Reach.

“You have an opportunity to meet artist Willa Downing in person on February 17th at 10:30am in Abbotsford, when she will tour the public through her exhibition Maps of Weather as part of The Reach’s free C3 (Culture, Coffee & Cookies) program,” explains Laura Schneider, curator at The Reach. “Following the tour, guests are invited to chat with Downing, socialize and enjoy some refreshments.”

Pre-register in person at The Reach, 32388 Veterans Way, call 604 864 8087 or online at www.thereach.ca/events-programs.
