By John Horgan, BC NDP Energy Critic. On Tuesday, the BC Liberal government gave the green light to a reckless 28% increase in BC Hydro bills across BC.
This rate hike will cost an average ratepayer another $300 per year when fully implemented.
Today, we’re launching the fight to protect British Columbians from unreasonable rate increases, and reinstate the independent watchdog that protects consumers.
I can’t underline how crucial a fight this is.
The BC Liberals have no mandate to implement huge hydro rate increases like this. They didn’t campaign on it during the election, and they have no plan to keep rates affordable for families that are already being squeezed.
For people living in colder parts of the province, this rate hike can mean choosing between groceries and heat.
But we can do something about it.
