Tretheway House

Abbotsford’s most important early industries are represented in Trethewey House: it was built with the finest fir lumber produced at the mill on Mill Lake. The mill was operated by the Abbotsford Lumber Company, which was owned by J.O. and his brothers. The bricks used in the chimneys and fireplaces were made with clay mined on nearby Sumas Mountain and processed at Clayburn Village, B.C.’s first company town.

Trethewey House was designated as a heritage site in 1983, and is now operated by the MSA Museum Society. We encourage you to come view the house and enjoy our period gardens and spacious grounds. Today it is the home of the MSA Museum Society.

Reminiscent of a quaint English village with neat gardens, surrounded by white picket fences, Clayburn was the first company town in British Columbia.

It supported three stores, a bank, a school and a church.

It is now one of Abbotsford’s tourism gems.

Samuel Maclure, brother of Charles, designed most of the brick buildings and was to become an architect of note designing many outstanding buildings in the Vancouver and Victoria area.

Local produce growers, small-scale food producers, and creative artisans have just completed the finishing touches on their booths, and not a minute too soon.

The shoppers have arrived, browsing among the aromatic baked goods and vibrant salad greens, the colorful handmade soaps and harvest-fresh apples.
