From Abbotsford Magnuson Ford Soccer Club. This past weekend, the U13 Boys MFM Lightning won their District 5 League Cup Final over Langley United B. The game started well for the Lightning with striker Puneet Mangat opening the scoring off a beautiful set up from Alexander Elia. The Abbotsford squad kept the pressure on for most of the first half with wonderful attempts from Parker Wood, Sukhjit Singh, Jack Clark and Keenen Chounlamontry. The Lightning defense anchored by Brad Johnson, Caleb Heath, Adam Calzavara and Randy Saprai held the opposition to just three attempts in the first half. Heath stopped a sure breakaway with a fine slide tackle.
The second half started with the same pressure as the first half with strikers Yashvinder Sidhu and Alexander Martens leading several key attempts. Langley was finally able to break through the Abbotsford defense and scored a second half tally drawing even with the Lightning. Abbotsford continued to push with fine play by midfielders Baldeep Dhillon, Saajan Pooni and Steven Cueva. The final whistle ended with the match in a draw resulting in a shoot out.
Keeper Brandon Pizzuto was brilliant in the net saving three of four attempts while the Lightning was able to seal their first Championship win scoring three of their four shots. This was the first year for the boys playing 11 aside. After a rocky start, the boys rallied winning 5 of 6 cup games and eventually winning the Championship.
