The Abbotsford Dignitarian Society is in the process of planning Abby Digs Village as a housing first pilot program. We are making excellent progress and have an event that needs volunteers! Its an opportunity for you to see the property and to help plant edible trees that will provide fruit for the residents and perhaps for a seasonal fruit stand on the property. Below are all the details. Bring your green thumbs and come join us for a fund afternoon of planting!!

What: Valley Permaculture Guild successfully received Edible Trees Canada’s $4000 grant to plant an edible food forest, focusing on shrubs, trees, and other hardy edibles. VPG chose to partner with Abbotsford Dignitarian Society’s Abby Digs Village project to raise awareness for the project as well as support the vision of ADS. VPG will be planting approximately 1/4 of the plants as site development isn’t complete yet, and the time of year isn’t optimal for planting–the rest of the plants will be planted in Fall with another planting blitz.
When: Sunday, June 22, 2014. 8 am – 2 pm (or until we’re done!)
Where: On Valley Rd, traveling West off Sumas Hwy/Hwy 11, go over the tracks, and turn right (North) at the large white gate after the telephone pole marked with red tape. If you reach the transfer station, you’ve gone too far. Park in the large gravel lot at the entrance to the property, making sure to leave room for others. If you’ve biked or ridden transit, you get a star (and I’d like to see shovels and trees on a bike), and you and pedestrians will follow the red tape to the North end of the property, where you will check in with our volunteer table, under the tent.
Who: Community members from across the Valley are invited to join us as we begin to change the landscape of the property at Valley Road, and hopefully, the climate surrounding Abbotsford’s homeless population. Bring: shovels, rakes, other garden tools, wheelbarrows, gloves, liquids, plants if you have extra to share, food to share for lunch, sweat, blood, and laughter. Children are definitely welcome, so please bring your families and come have some fun!
