Submitted. At 07:44 pm on Sunday, June 09, 2013 Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS) responded to reports of flames and smoke visible in the area of McKee Peaks close to a communication tower.

On arrival, AFRS members entered the area by foot and reported two large slash piles burning in the middle of a land clearing site close to the communication tower. Although wind conditions were contributing to a very hot, fast burning fire, the fire was contained to the piles and was not spreading.

Attempts were made to gain access to the site with fire suppression vehicles from a number of different points on the mountain, with no success. AFRS allowed the fires to burn and remained on site to monitor the fires until conditions were safe. As a precaution, the Wildfire Management Branch was contacted and kept on standby. By 11:00 pm, conditions had improved enough for crews to leave the area.

The cause of the fires is unknown, but crews are re-attending the site today to ensure the location is safe and the fires are out. There is no civic address for this property.
