Mayor Bruce Banman tonight announced on his Facebook page that he will not attend the Mayoralty Candidates debate sponsored by a group of non-profits of Abbotsford at City Hall Thursday night.
Then, three hours later, he changed his mind and said he would be there for part of the evening – between 8pm and 9pm.
“I would like to thank Abbotsford Community Services Society for the invitation to participate in your October 23rd debate. Unfortunately, this event is scheduled at the same time as one of the most important dates on the Sikh and Hindu calendar for a large percentage of our community, Diwali, and I have committed to participate in a number of celebrations throughout the city at the same time.
“I would like to thank organizations like ACS for their continued dedication to improving the lives of all of Abbotsford’s residents, a goal that we all have for our city.
As mayor, I have been committed to working with my colleagues at the provincial and federal governments as well as not-for-profit agencies like ACS to find long-term and sustainable solutions for critical issues, facing our city. If re-elected I will continue to build the partnerships necessary to keep Abbotsford moving forward.”
