CANUCK PLACE CHILDREN’S HOSPICE AWARDED EXEMPLARY STANDING FROM ACCCREDITATION CANADA
Submitted. Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, BC’s pediatric palliative care provider, was awarded Exemplary Standing by Accreditation Canada, the highest level granted to a health organization. For over 21 years, the provincial program has provided complex care to infants, children, and teens living with life-threatening conditions, ages 0-19, made possible through donors, community partners, and the Province of BC.
The 2016 Accreditation is a significant milestone for the organization. Accreditation Canada surveyors noted, “Canuck Place Children’s Hospice was acknowledged to be a leader in the specialized field of pediatric palliative care.” This outstanding achievement demonstrates the level of excellence that Canuck Place continuously exhibits in providing quality healthcare services to nationally accepted standards.
“The 2016 Accreditation Canada process is a way to acknowledge and celebrate what Canuck Place does best. It is about ensuring we are current with national standards in all parts of our organization,” said Margaret McNeil, CEO of Canuck Place. “I am very grateful to our team for contributing to the success of the review, and most importantly, to our success every day in providing complex care to over 670 children with life-threatening illnesses and families from across BC.”
During a rigorous two day on-site assessment, Canuck Place was evaluated against Accreditation Canada requirements for quality and safety. The final report identified many of the organization’s strengths including its focus on patient and family-centered care and strong interdisciplinary team functioning. The report highlights other areas of strengths including strong ethical processes and capacity, emergency preparedness plans, research in pediatric palliative care, and a comprehensive quality and safety framework with ongoing quality improvement initiatives.
