By David Kent. The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team defeated the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, 79-69, in Canada West regular season action at the Envision Athletic Centre.
The Cascades came out strong tonight and quickly grabbed the early lead and never looked back as they opened a four point spread after the first quarter and built on the momentum of the crowd tonight to increase the lead to 14 points at the break. UFV shot 36 percent in the first half, from the floor, as Klaus Figueredo, Calgary, Alberta and Kevon Parchment, Toronto, Ontario each scored 10 points in the first half. The Pronghorns were led by Rob Olsen, Cardston, Alberta with 6 points at the intermission, Lethbridge shot 36 percent in the half.
In the second half, UFV continued to play great defense holding Lethbridge’s shooters in check as the lead continue to grow, to 19 points as UFV shot close to 50 percent in the quarter. Coach Adam Friesen was able to play his bench in the fourth quarter as Lethbridge was able to chip away at the double figure deficit. The Cascades shot 47 percent from the floor and 50 percent from the three point arch tonight a great start to the 22 game regular season. Parchment led all scorers with 28 points as four different Cascades were in double figures. Jasper Moedt, Abbotsford, BC pulled down a team high 13 rebounds to go with 15 point performance, Moedt was named by the Cascade broadcast crew as “player of the game.”
UFV out rebounded Lethbridge 47 to 46 for the game.
The Pronghorns top scorer was Jared Baker, Raymond, Alberta with 15 and Brent Watkins, Temple City, CA pulled down a team leading 16 rebounds.
“We played a very good game tonight, the team stayed with the game plan. The players were able to feed off the very excited crowd and they were a great sixth man for us,” said UFV assistant coach Kyle Graves.
