By George F. Evens. Recently, former MLA Randy Hawes caused some public concerns about his opinion Fraser Health may close the Christine Morrison Hospice. At the time it seemed reminiscent of “Old Randy” and his penchant for fear-mongering or in anticipation of the upcoming November Municipal Election some, politicking, anything to start to get his name in press.
As is my custom to seek facts first, I sought clarification from Dr. David Ostrow, President, CEO of Fraser Health and have now received this answer from Dr.Ostrow, which I attach below to hopefully eliminate Public worry and fears about possible closure of this important facility. Doctor Ostrow states
” With regard to the Christine Morrison Hospice, I can assure you that there are no plans to close these hospice beds. Fraser Health has a comprehensive long term plan for end of life care throughout all our communities and Christine Morrison Hospice in Mission is an important part of the care continuum provided to support and comfort patients from Abbotsford, Missions and surrounding communities. Fraser Health is continually reviewing its services to meet the needs of communities, which is why the Holmberg House Hospice, in Abbotsford, is currently being developed and expected to open in 2016. This will allow residents of Abbotsford who need hospice services to receive support and comfort closer to home. Building hospice beds is part of the Ministry of Health’s end of life care strategy, which calls for the doubling of beds across the province by 2020. We will continue to provide compassionate and supportive end of life care to residents in Mission and their families. I trust this information is helpful to you. Dr. David Ostrow, President & CEO, FHA.
We appreciate this clarification and shall continue to seek and publish facts rather than cause unnecessary alarm in the Public mind, particularly in such a sensitive matter as end of life care. We sincerely hope Randy may follow our lead and demonstrate the same respect and caring for our Elderly.
