Gearing Up For Eating Disorder Awareness Week

Submitted. The Provincial Eating Disorders Awareness (PEDAW) campaign is gearing up for National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, (February 1-7, 2015) with a number of initiatives.

Free Panel Discussion, January 31
In partnership with Vancouver Public Library, PEDAW is proud to present Ending the War With our Bodies: How to Obtain a Positive Body Image, a free panel discussion taking place January 31 from Noon – 1:30pm. The event takes place at Vancouver Public Library, Central Branch, 350 West Georgia St., Vancouver, in the Alma VanDusen and Peter Kaye rooms, Lower Level.

The event will feature insight from a number of individuals:

Carmen Saucier, Simon Fraser University student and part time gymnastics coach whose passion for exuding a positive body image formed after finding recovery from her own eating disorder

CaraLynne McLean, Registered Clinical Counsellor and member of the North Shore Education Committee for the Prevention of Eating Disorders.

Caitlin O’Reilly, PhD candidate at the University of British Columbia with current research priorities in eating disorders treatment and reducing weight stigma in health care

Helen Yeung, Public Health Dietitian with Vancouver Coastal Health and clinical instructor in the UBC Dietetics Program.

Victoria Maxwell, actress, and passionate speaker about lived experience with mental illness, will moderate the panel.

PEDAW Wristband Challenge, February 1-7
Grab your camera, order your free wristband and get ready for PEDAW’s Wristband Challenge. BC residents are encouraged to order a free Love our Bodies, Love Ourselves wristband, take a photo with the wristband and post to the Campaign’s Twitter @loveourbodies and Facebook www.facebook.com/loveourbodiesloveourselves accounts, February 1-7th. The wristbands not only are a symbol of acceptance for oneself, but are also a symbol of support for those that struggle with an eating disorder. Wristbands can be ordered online through this link.

Join PEDAW on February 6 and wear purple to show your support for Eating Disorders Awareness. Tweet @loveourbodies or share your purple photos on the Facebook event page. BC Place, Science World, the Olympic Cauldron at the Vancouver Convention Centre will also be lighting up purple.

The Provincial Eating Disorders Awareness (PEDAW) campaign is a BC Province wide effort to raise awareness around prevention and early intervention of eating disorders as well as media literacy, resiliency, building healthy body image and self-esteem. The initiative is led by Jessie’s Legacy Eating Disorders Prevention Program at Family Services of the North Shore in collaboration with Kelty Mental Health Resource Centre, Looking Glass Foundation, St. Paul ’s Specialized Adult Eating Disorder Program, BC Children’s Hospital Eating Disorders Program, Healthy Minds, Healthy Campuses and Project True. PEDAW is launched the first full week in February with activities and events taking place throughout the year.
