Submitted. Canuck Place Children’s Hospice (CPCH) is British Columbia’s recognized pediatric palliative care provider. Over 560 newborns, children and teens with life-threatening illnesses and their families receive care from CPCH through outreach programs and two provincial locations.

CPCH’s second provincial location opened in Spring 2014. Dave Lede House – Abbotsford.
Located on the Campus of Care, adjacent to the Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

The facility is now operating in phase 2 of its four phase opening plan providing community-centred services to help support the over 46% of the children and families on the Canuck Place program who reside in the Fraser Valley region and those living around the province of BC.
Families need support adjusting to their child’s functional decline, increasing dependence and distressing physical symptoms.

An integral part of the community-centered services is a Fraser Valley-based CPCH Advanced Practice Nurse (APN). Children and their families benefit from coordinated care services including counselling, recreation and specialized nursing expertise.

Canuck Place APN, Kirsten Campbell, has been with CPCH since January 2014.

As an Advanced Practice Nurse, she:
-Provides support and care for families facing the numerous challenges encountered when raising a child with a life-threatening illness.
-Helps to coordinate the child’s care, provide pain and symptom management, and reduce the strain on their families and the child.
-Is able to reach out to families on the CPCH program through phone consultation, visits to families’ homes and community hospitals in the Fraser Valley.
-Enables Canuck Place to provide pediatric palliative care services in a cost-effective manner to more children and families through home and hospital visits in the Lower Mainland, the Fraser Valley and around the province.

Born and raised in the Fraser Valley, Kirsten began her nursing career at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver for nine years.
After completing her Master of Arts in Healthcare Leadership, Kirsten joined the Canuck Place clinical care team as an APN in 2014. Her desire to join Canuck Place was inspired by a touching experience she had when transitioning a family to Canuck Place during her time at BC Children’s Hospital.
In joining the Canuck Place, she and her young family moved back to Abbotsford where she now enjoys living, working and making an impact in the local community.

The inaugural Canuck Place Children’s Hospice Gift of Love Gala, presented by a caring community partnership between Aldergrove Financial Group, Envision Financial and Prospera Credit Union, will be hosted Saturday, February 7.

Funds raised through the event will help support the pediatric palliative care to over 560 children with life-threatening illnesses and their families through two provincial locations: Vancouver and Abbotsford.

Included in fundraising at the event is three-months of APN support for the Fraser Valley at a cost of $20,000.
