Upcoming Festival Events At a Glance. The Festival is officially on! Day one has come and gone leaving behind the most successful opening night the HSBC City of Bhangra Festival has ever seen.

There are still five more days left to go in this cultural celebration. We have performers from around the globe, from right here in Vancouver, and from all the way in the UK and Punjab here to celebrate Bhangra music at its best.

Monday’s celebration included hip-hop mash ups, live vocals, dance battles and electrifying live performances. Be sure to catch Influx at the Surrey Art Gallery.

This is a taste of what’s to come, don’t miss out on a chance to be part of the movement for the 9th Annual HSBC City of Bhangra Festival.

Witness diversity, inclusion and the passion for Bhangra music and dance come alive in a spectacular 9 day Festival taking place in both Vancouver and Surrey.

VIBC will host its ninth annual City of Bhangra Festival from May 30 to June 8 and welcomes back HSBC Bank Canada as the title sponsor of the festival for the second time. The HSBC City of Bhangra Festival is set to be one of the biggest must-see spring events in Metro Vancouver.

This year’s festival line-up includes various independent events, hundreds of performers, and international artists from the UK, US and India. The festival will include free outdoor concerts and dance performances, workshops, conferences, and percussion events. The HSBC City of Bhangra Festival is a feast for the senses and appealing to diverse audiences from all over the community.
THE HSBC CITY OF BHANGRA FESTIVAL: THE MOVEMENT

Since our inception in 2004, efforts have been underway to transform the perception of this region of the world into that of a capital of Bhangra – a hub of innovation, cultural leadership and platform for excellence. Our audiences have grown and shown their appreciation for this platform over the years. At our festival events a single incoming team will sometimes bring upwards of 50 fans following them from venue to venue – multiply this with dozens of international dance teams and a whole host of performing talent, and you see the international crowd that is drawn to our annual events.

In fact, many of our attendees from Seattle and Calgary use the HSBC City of Bhangra Festival as an opportunity for their annual pilgrimage to the South Asian community in Surrey and Vancouver and use the occasion as a time to partake in cultural events, visiting restaurants and, of course, shopping.
COMMUNITY: FROM TAIKO DRUMS TO BRAZILIAN PERCUSSION — IT’S ALL BHANGRA

Nowhere will you see a more sincere application of the spirit of celebration, joy, inclusion and community that is embodied by Bhangra, than in the HSBC City of Bhangra Festival. We’ve used one of the most attractive dance and musical forms in the world as a means to bring together disparate cultures and nationalities. We use Bhangra as our lens, our looking glass to examine ourselves in the context of the wider community and provide our community with a window into the South Asian community and its values.

But, it’s not a spectator sport. Through events such as rePercussion, we encourage attendees to imagine the possibilities of living in a community that has evolved far beyond aspirations of “tolerance” and is intimately embracing and participating in different cultural forms. The HSBC City of Bhangra Festival encourages a new type of cultural literacy that is relevant and progressive in our new global realities.
