It hasn’t escaped some people that BC Hydro’s plans to remove the homeless from their camps along Gladys Avenue involved precisely the same piece of land and many of the same people who were involved in Abbotsford’s biggest international black eye – the Chicken Manure Incident.
While Abbotsford’s war on the homeless has been going on for years, it was that incident, first reported on June 4, 2014, which brought international media attention and near unanimous condemnation for the City’s actions.
Mayor Bruce Banman took full responsibility for the act but has never explained whether he ordered it, suggested it or had anything do with it. Nor has he or the City ever indicated who gave the order to use chicken feces on Abbotsford citizens. The Abbotsford News, in an editorial, told the community it was low level city workers who were responsible, whereas, emails revealed by the CBC and Abbotsford Today showed that many senior staff were aware of plan as was the Salvation Army which approved of the action.
