Release. Two sports organizations in Abbotsford will be benefiting from a total of $134,500 combined funding thanks to two Community Gaming Grants announced Abbotsford-South MLA Darryl Plecas today.

  • Abbotsford Skating Club – $45,000
  • British Columbia Speed Skating Association – $89,500

“The British Columbia Speed Skating Association is very pleased to receive a grant of $89,500 this year,” executive director, Ted Houghton said. “These funds will primarily support our province-wide programs of athlete, coaching and official’s development.”

“Skating clubs need financial assistance to help pay for ice time and coaches said Plecas. “It offsets the cost of training to athletes and makes it much more affordable for families.”

These grants have been awarded under the sport category of the Community Gaming Grant Program, which allows non-profit organizations to apply for provincial gaming revenues from the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. Gaming Grants are also awarded in the categories of Arts and Culture, Public Safety, Environment and Human Social Services.

In the 2012/2013 fiscal year, our government distributed a total of $135 million in gaming grants for eligible community programs and services.
