UPDATED – 24/01/13 – In a press release sent out Thursday, Abbotsford Councillor Moe Gill confirmed his intention to run against Liberal incumbent Mike de Jong in the next provincial election saying it was not his first choice to run as an Independent MLA.

“As most of you know, Moe had intended to run as a member of the Liberal Party but he, along with others to follow, were treated with great disrespect by the Liberal leadership team. The Liberal leadership team chose to ignore the wishes of members of our community and manipulated the democratic process by ordaining Darryl Plecas as their preferred one.”

The release goes on to state, “Moe’s announcement will take place on Sunday, January 27th, 2013 at the Abbotsford Banquet and Convention Hall, located at 33738 Laurel Street, Abbotsford, British Columbia (Phone (604) 557-9899). Doors open at 2:00 pm to the general public, with light refreshments being served at 2:30 pm. Brad Boyes will host the event, with special guests and speeches from a number of our communities free-enterprisers.”

Vancouver Sun columnist Vaughn Palmer revealed Wednesday that Moe Gill will announce his intention to seek the Liberal nomination in Mike de Jong’s riding on Snuday.

According to Palmer, “The watching game ended Wednesday morning with a press release headed, “Moe Gill fights back for our community! Moe Gill says ‘no’ to the Liberal leadership team.”

“Instead he’d be running as an independent candidate in Abbotsford West, bailiwick of — yes! — his former friend Mike de Jong. Well, the Liberals wanted Gill to relocate.”

Gill was blindsided by an internal party decision at the highest levels to parachute UFV criminologist Darryl Plecas in to the Abbotsford West riding over the objections of the local riding association who favoured Gill.

The entire riding association executive resigned in protest.
