Stars Drop Heat 9 – 3

Submitted. The Abbotsford Heat lost 9-3 to the Texas Stars (AHL affiliate of the Dallas Stars) on Sunday night at the Cedar Park Center.

Despite a great first and second period by and holding a 3-1 lead at one point, the Heat were outplayed in the third period and lost 9-3 to Texas. The Stars top line of Travis Morin, Colton Sceviour, and Curtis McKenzie found their goal scoring touch and combined for 12 points in the game.

The Stars opened the scoring in the first period on an unassisted goal from Mike Hedden. The Heat replied with Tyler Wotherspoon’s first career AHL goal at the 11:14 mark assisted by Josh Jooris. The Heat took their first lead of the game at 17:26 of the first on a goal by Greg Nemisz, assisted by Corban Knight and Zach McKelvie. The shots after 20 minutes were 8-7 in favour of the Stars.

The Heat opened the scoring in the second period on a goal from Chad Billins, with the assists going to Brett Olson and Drew MacKenzie. However, the Stars scored two unanswered goals by Travis Morin and Chris Mueller to tie the game at 3-3.

The Heat had penalty trouble in the third period, and the Stars scored back-to-back power play goals by McKenzie and Sceviour to make it a 5-3 game. Sceviour scored two more goals to cap off a third period hat-trick. Cameron Gaunce and Matej Stransky rounded out the scoring, as the Stars scored six goals in the final period to come away with a 9-3 win.

The Heat finished the game zero for three on the power play and killed off three of eight Stars power plays.

Laurent Brossoit faced 42 shots, stopping 33 and was charged with the loss. Christopher Nilstorp earned the win for Texas, stopping 20 of 23 shots in the game.

The next Heat home games are Friday, October 25th and Saturday, October 26th against the Lake Erie Monsters (AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche).
