By Elsiewhere. He was the first to arrive at the Rally for the Homeless at City Hall at noon today.
“My name’s Renee. Everybody knows me.”
“Welcome, Renee. Where do you live?”
He spread his arms wide and turned back and forth, looked at the sky, and said “Everywhere.”
“So you have no home?”
“No. I usually stay over at the Rotary Stadium. I like to keep to myself.”
“So, Renee. If this apartment for 20 homeless men is built, would you move into it?”
“For sure! I would.”
“And the scarf. Why have you tied it around your head?”
“Because it keeps my ears warm.”
“Did you stay warm this night?”
He bent over, lifted his right pant leg.
“Oh. That’s how you do it. I wish I had brought some of those little foot warmer things. My feet are freezing.”
“Would you like to use my bags? Here. You can use them.”
“No, no. You need them more than I do.”
Thanks for coming to the rally today, Renee. Stay warm!
