As the newspaper industry continues to shrink some of the repercussions will be hitting close to home for employees of the Abbotsford Times and other Glacier Media publications as the company contracts their jobs out overseas.
According to Rob Munro, vice-president of the Media Union of B.C., the owners of the Abbotsford Times, Glacier Media Inc., will be laying of 15 unionized workers on December 13 as the company contracts out production jobs at five of its Lower Mainland newspapers.
The jobs being eliminated are at the Abbotsford Times, the Surrey Now, the Burnaby Now, Coquitlam Now and the New Westminster Record.
The news was first published October 4 earlier this month that ad production at the community papers will be sent to a Philippines company which has offices in Manila and Pune India.
After that announcement, Black Press, owners of the Abbotsford News and Chilliwack Progess, announced it will soon own the Abbotsford and Chilliwack Times. That will leave the two communities with only one out-of-town newspaper owner.
Black Press has still not yet indicated whether or not it will shut the two papers.
Greg Cross Says:
All union people should send a letter to the paper and tell them not to put the paper on their doorstep.
