Two Hwy #1 Fatalities In Abbotsford Area

On May 31, 2014 at approximately 11:55 AM, Fraser Valley Traffic Services responded to the report of a motor vehicle collision on Highway 1 at Sumas Way, Abbotsford, BC. The investigation revealed that a 44 year old woman from Maple Ridge was operating a 1997 GMC Yukon east bound on Highway #1, when she lost control of her vehicle and left the travel portion of the highway into the center median, and came to rest on its roof in the east bound lane. All three occupants in the vehicle were taken to local hospitals, where the driver passed away from her injuries.

The investigation also revealed that a second vehicle may have contributed to this collision.  A commercial cube style truck had changed into the fast lane to allow traffic entering the highway to merge in.  In his mirror the driver of the commercial truck saw the GMC Yukon swerving.  The driver of the commercial vehicle did pull over to the side of the highway and called 911.  The driver remained on scene and has fully cooperated with this investigation.

The Fraser Valley Traffic Services and the Integrated Collision Accident Reconstruction Services are continuing their investigations. Should anyone have witnessed this collision and not yet spoken to police, they are asked to contact the lead investigator Constable Blair Paterson at the Fraser Valley Traffic Services Office at 604-702-4039.
