By Mike Archer. Abbotsford drug addicts are one step closer to not being left in a ditch to die from HIV or Hepatitis C thanks to Abbotsford Council’s decision to revisit its anti-harm reduction bylaw.
When 85 percent of those who expressed an interest in the City’s illegal anti-harm reduction bylaw at the two public meetings held on the subject said they want the City to stop persecuting its addicts even Patricia Ross must have heard the sweet sound of votes lilting through the air.
One of the staunchest defenders of the City’s illegal stand against the reduction of harm, Councillor Simon Gibson, is still afraid that the drug hoards will invade the City since … well it’s really kind of hard to follow Simon’s logic …
Abbotsford is the only city in Canada that refuses to allow its addicts to live long enough to receive the help and treatment they need by making it illegal to operate needle exchanges in here.
Simon feels that, if we remove that deadly restriction, Abbotsford will become “A centre for drug users.” He has never been able to explain why drug addicts would suddenly pack up and move from communities where they are allowed to receive clean needles and the medical care to which they are constitutionally entitled as Canadian citizens, and suddenly move to Abbotsford where they are clearly not welcome anyway.
What is he so afraid of?While it is disturbing enough that a man who has lived off of the public trough for 30 years can exhibit such nonsensical and illogical thinking (and we have mentioned it many times) it is worth taking a deep breath and considering that this man is now running for election to the provincial legislature where, if elected, even though he will be a member of the opposition, he will have the opportunity to have an impact on provincial legislation.
We have spoken before about Abbotsford Council’s inability to understand the law and the fact that they are not allowed to pass Ultra Vires legislation, but now Simon, who doesn’t appear to have a very good grounding in the law, the Canada Health Act, the Constitution, the Charter of Rights or even a very basic understanding of his job, wants to get a raise and pension by moving his political life to Victoria.
It is a bandwagon the voters of Abbotsford-Mission should think about carefully before embarking. A Bear of Very Little Brain is still a Bear of Very Little Brain even if he’s a BC Liberal.
We’ve had a lot of fun over the years poking fun at Simon but he was only making a fool of himself within the confines of Abbotsford Council where, heaven knows, he doesn’t stand out in the crowd. This is more serious stuff. Now he wants to pass real laws.
If there was ever a moment in BC history when we desperately needed people in Victoria who have a smidgen of understanding about what is and isn’t legal it is now.
“When you are a Bear of Very Little Brain, and you Think of Things, you find sometimes that a Thing which seemed very Thingish inside you is quite different when it gets out into the open and has other people looking at it.” – A.A. Milne
Abbotsford already is a centre for drug users. Too late, Simon.
Why don’t we make it a centre for HEALTH and WELLNESS? There’s a concept.
argh.
and meanwhile, the vancouver sun picked up the story of the opening of the George Schmidt Centre, at Kinghaven. Something this city can be very proud of, and yet. Where was Mayor Banman when the opening ceremony took place? Not to be found at the site. Grrrr.

I bet AA Milne never imagined he’d be quoted like this. But, how apt!
