Artists Of Abbotsford – Photographers: The Work Of Jason Brown

By January 23, 20150 - Photographers, Arts, Photography

By Mike Archer. Among all the artists in Abbotsford, photographers get perhaps the least publicity or praise. Abbotsford photographer Jason Brown has been putting Abbotsford on the map winning national and provincial awards and now the Matthews House Project.

Jason has been developing a reputation for evocative photos that capture both the essence of the subject and the moment, a unique combination that eludes many technically good photographers. It’s where technical expertise and training meet art and Jason, more than most, is able to find that elusive mixture.

Below we have featured ten of the photos from the Matthews House Project out of a gallery of 72. Please don’t take our choice as in any way defining Jason Brown or even being the best he has ton offer. We simply urge you to visit his website and explore his work.

We’ve included an excerpt from Doreen Jung’s column on Matthew, background and links to more of Jason Brown’s work and history as well as contact information and links at the bottom of the story.

Matthew’s Story

Doreen Jung, Abbotsford Arts Council

By Doreen Jung
Complications at his birth left him severely brain damaged. All his life he was completely dependent on others to help him meet his needs.
.
He required a feeding tube, had uncontrollable seizures, was cortically blind, and had respiratory problems. He also suffered from chronic pain because his body was twisted with scoliosis and contractures of limbs.
.
Matthew could not communicate verbally but his smile could light up a room. Loved deeply by his parents, family, friends, and all who worked with him, Matthew’s life inspired Matthew’s house.

On August 14, 2010, just before his 10th birthday, Matthew passed away. The legacy of his life remains.

On November 28th, 2010, Jason and Darcie Brown launched their first book of children’s photography at a red carpet event at the Reach Museum Gallery. Their book, entitled “Imagine” features individual portraits of 153 children from the Fraser Valley.

Editor’s Note: First published January 2013. Jason has won several awards and accolades since this first appeared.
