Art Feature: Dutch Artist Ada Krowinkel

By February 1, 2013Arts

Mea Culpa, a painting by Dutch artist Ada Krowinkel, served as the cover art for a feature on Abbotsford Today in May of 2010.

A beautiful and stunning reddish painting with collages, it evokes harsh emotions (please see bottom of the post).

This week Kowinkel got in touch with us through our Facebook page with samples of her new work.

Krowinkel is from Breda in the Netherlands and although creativity was a powerful force in her life, it was not until 2000 that she made a serious commitment to art, beginning with painting lessons from several artists. The turning point came after completing the Saturday Academy of Arts. Ada says a door was opened which she can never close.

She has developed her own abstract expressionist style and has become a member of BOA, the association of professional artists in Breda.

The source
The source of her paintings is the human being, his or her personal history, the sum of our experiences, the blueprint in each of us. Ada says it is an inexhaustible source of inspiration. This comes through in the collages in her paintings which she uses to unveil a person’s history.

Some objects are obvious, other less so, and can only be interpreted by the viewer. That, she says, is how it should be. Krowinkel says that the painting itself helps us discover our opinion of what we see, if we will give it the chance to do it’s magic.

.

Each painting creates the atmosphere which allows us to understand it. This, she says, is the real beauty in art.

Sometimes an article in a newspaper will inspire her to express herself on canvas, for example; Albino’s in the field.

.

The painting tells the story of albinos in Africa being pursued because of their white skin. Albinos has more of a classical theme than her other works.

.

Technique
Acrylic paint on canvas is her principal medium, but she sometimes combines this with other media and techniques to create a new reality landscape.

.

These other media can be glass, net, (bible) texts, photos, earth, sand, lace … anything can be used in the telling of her story.

Another important thing to Krowinkel is the colours she uses. They must be expressive. A deep blue, a colourful red, she uses many layers of paint to achieve the desired effect.

Ada paints with knives, big brushes, scrapers, sponges and with her hands. Accompanied by very loud rock or classical music -some people call it ‘action-painting.’

.

With the canvas lying on the floor, Ada prepares to battle with her paints. She prefers to paint outside on the terrace at her house in the centre of Breda.

.

Exhibitions
She has had several exhibitions in the Netherlands, both group and solo exhibitions, and they were very successful. Her work is being well received by critics and art lovers.

.

She has had exhibitions at the Chamber of Commerce, the Court and in galleries.

Krowinkel is now preparing for exhibitions abroad. Will Canada be the first to seize the opportunity?
